Suwanee began as an Indian village and became a city back in 1837. The name comes from “Shawnee”, the Indian word for “Southerner”, and refers to an Algonquin tribe that lived near the Chattahoochee River further “south” than any other Algonquin Tribe.

Suwanee was incorporated in 1949 and remained a small town until the 70’s. At this time we have over 17,000 residents.

Suwanee has recently renovated its historic downtown area but continues to emphasize keeping as much “green space” as possible. This has been accomplished by adopting a strong land preservation program for open spaces, parks, trails, walkways and recreation areas.

The city of Suwanee has received many national awards and recognition over the years.
